Leeds producer Debian Blak has garnered a loyal fanbase since emerging in 2011; his unique brand of precision cut bass, choppy rhythms and glistening electronics have made him a well sought-after remix producer, (Laura Mvula and Mt Wolf are the most recent) attracting feverish praise from buzz blogs like Indieshuffle, Hypetrak and others. This year he teams up with renowned indie label Audio Doughnuts for his third release, the Six Months From Mars EP.
The title track is a vibrant and glistening affair, featuring syncopated kicks, shimmering synths and deliciously chopped up vocals. Dense but inviting, it’s a complex yet charismatic cut.
Where You is a more introspective piece, with glowing pads backing punchy kicks. Synthetic sounds prevail but a woody percussion pairs with a raindrop-like ambiance, growing ever more vibrant and vivacious.
Dive features Kate from Mt Wolf, mixing fractured, brightly coloured sound designs with a broken beat pattern as Kate’s neo soul vocals add a human, gentle warmth to the chilled out sounds.
Can’t Get Enough is the final offering featuring vocal talent Neo Joshua: a rich, xylophone laced throwback to late nineties Dance/early Garage music vocals.
Six Days from Mars EP is an assured production, with top drawer, modern sounds and emotive vocals guaranteed to move body and soul. Debian Blak is a new school leader in Future-RnB with a House twist.
