Toy Tonics use their next release as an opportunity to introduce the world to one of the hot new kids of the Italian house scene in the form of Ricardo Baez. The Ep comes with a remix from Simple Records and Turbo man Sei A.
At just 23 years old Baez has already toured as a support DJ for Kim Ann Foxmann, Azari & II and more. His debut EP is inspired by 90’s UK Garage, vogueing and New York (where he has spent some time) as well as legends like Marshall Jefferson and Kevin Saunderson. It kicks off with ‘If You’ which has fierce pinging kick drums and plenty of warm and elastic chords weaving their way in and out. A well used and clipped vocal adds another level of excitement and it’s hard to imagine dancefloors not going mad for this one.
Scotsman Sei A remixes the track into a much more moody and broody affair with enveloping subs, long thin pads and plenty of glassy melodies and scratchy textures before the next original ‘The Message’ sees Baez up the party ante with bouncy, chopped up bass stabs and skewed synths twisting and turning in every direction, carrying you along in the process. It’s bright and colourful, well designed and impossible not to love, frankly.
Next, ‘The Language of Heaven’ is another lively and energetic house cut that pays homage to past masters at the same time as surging into the future. A vocal muses about why we are here amongst all manner of bulbous and glowing neon melodies and synth stabs. The same track then gets a Newbody remix and becomes a tighter affair based around a simple but effective bassline this truly hits the mark. Chords roll off into the distance and there’s something of a cosmic energy to this one and the FX that swirl in and out of earshot
This EP marks a fine start to the career of Ricardo Baez and is likely to bring him much attention in the coming months.
