Sebastian Ledher – “…people in Madrid are extremely party-loving, so the scene grows more and more…”
Hey, hello, hello. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. I wanted to start by talking about your local scene.
What’s it like for electronic music? A lot different than the usual Berlin, Ibiza, etc., I imagine?
Well, in Madrid there’s a little bit of everything… but I have noticed a great increase in underground music scene, there are clubs with a formidable range of plays. In fact, a lot of big artists visit the Capital and the public is more and more demanding… compared to Ibiza or Berlin, I think each place has its own charm, and people in Madrid are extremely party-loving, so the scene grows more and more…
When did you first become interested in electronic music then?
The first chance I had to listen to it, I got shocked, and it was around 1998 or so, I can’t remember exactly, but I do remember I wanted to get more and more music, so I used to sit down near my stereo system to record all sessions a local radio station broadcast… in my cassette tapes, in that moment.
What do you remember most fondly about the scene in your home town?
I’m from Armenia (Colombia), a very welcoming town. Local scene was slight, but incredible. They organized parties with international DJs, most of whom played tech house or techno… and the famous parties, which in fact where private parties, were affordable for hardly anyone… it captivated me, and it made me ache for a ticket, or at least, I just wanted to come in… I also remember there was a very solid scene of Hard Techno and Schranz. Those were raves! The very best ones were the locaciones (leases), they organized outdoor parties, such as in detached houses, ranches or hotels. They were really big parties, and they sometimes went on for two or three days. I also remember that all DJs played vinyl records, and I loved when they came in with their aluminum suitcases, which excited my curiosity…
Which notorious DJ had a big influence on you then? What other DJs were too?
I’ve always had Carl Cox in mind, because of his mastery and his great energy, Marco Carola, Roger Sanchez, Richie Hawtin, just to mention some of them…
Tell us about your future plans. Upcoming labels, releases?
Well, I’m working hard in my studio, but now, I’m working flat out thanks to my double residence, as well as the gigs that come up in different national and international clubs. I’m also working on my own record label, Play Groove Recordings… Well, I don’t have many upcoming releases, but I try to launch them gradually, and to improve the quality of my tracks, which have been released buy different record labels. Waldliebe Familien, Natural Rhythm, Deeperfect or Play Groove will be some of the record labels where my theme tunes will be soon…
If you would pick 5 tunes what would be those?
A very difficult question, hahaha, I’d rather not reveal them… I might go mad. I don’t have any favorite track. I renew my suitcase every week…
How do you do your own musical selection: Do you follow some producers or select what comes and goes?
I have some favorite producers and labels. I listen to lots of sets or podcasts and charts, as well as all promos I receive every day. I try to arrange those which I like the best. I love releasing new tracks and, especially, making the difference. Nowadays there are fantastic productions everywhere…
Do you have your own label? If not, do you plan to open one?
Yeah, its name is Play Groove Recordings.
You will release your music on vinyl too, I believe. Is it a medium that you very much still support and believe in?
Of course! I’m working hard. I want to cause quite a stir with it…
DJ set or live set?
Tell us a bit about your gear? What do you use for mixing / live set?
I love 4 cdj 2000 Nexus, djm 900 Nexus and if I’ve got an Rmx 1000 Pioneer, I really have a great time… I also love fx Traktor, especially its reverb and delay effects, as well as its fantastic filter…
Clubs or festivals?
One gig that you never forgot?
I have great memories of al lot of clubs, and in different places around the world, so it’s difficult to choose one. I think I instantly get through the public, and I keep unforgettable moments from each place.
Why do you think that Ibiza is so special?
Well, I think everything revolves around music and DJs there, and it keeps up magic for us… People want to have a good time…
Is a new wave now in industry: doing collaborations between producers? I also wanted to ask you about your collaborations. Have you done those? With whom?
Yeah, I love collaborations. I have performed with big artists, who I admire and follow, such as Saeed Younan, D-formation, Ivan Pica, Patrick M., J. Velarde, Lui Maldona, Alvaro Smart, Danny Leblack or Lex Green, just to mention some of them…
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I listen to a lot of things. Certainly, my favorite producers inspire me, although I like to sit down in my studio or record my own ideas from real instruments…
Finally, what else can we look forward to from you over the next while?
I always try to offer people that come to see me good music and good time
Many thanks for your time… We are impatiently waiting to hear our podcast.
